Summertime is prime time for weddings. The brighter sun, the bluer sky, the greener grass, the beautiful, fully bloomed flowers – all make a perfect backdrop for a wedding. You know what would make your wedding even more perfect? Making it eco-friendly! Here are 5 tips for having the green wedding of your dreams. 1. Getting the Word Out Consider using 100% recycled paper for your wedding invitations. You can even take it a step further and cut out the paper altogether by creating electronic announcements and invitations. Many people also create wedding websites containing all of the pertinent information (date, time, location) as well as travel information for out of town visitors. The possibilities are endless! 2. Keeping it Pretty Choose in season, locally grown flowers for your centerpieces, bouquets and boutineers. Organic, pesticide free is an even better choice. Dried or silk floral arrangements are another option. Instead of just throwing the flowers away at the end of the day, donate them to a hospital or nursing home and make it a special day for a lot of people. 3. Sealing the Deal Who doesn’t want a beautiful (or nice and manly ☺) ring to show off their “I’m married” status to the world? Unfortunately gold and diamond mining are not the most environmentally (or politically) correct businesses. Luckily for you, there are options. You can select vintage, recycled or reclaimed rings. If you opt to buy a new ring, make sure it is Fair Trade and Conflict Free. 4. Sharing the Wealth 5. Get a Little Less Bonus! Travel Tips Your family and friends may be spread far and wide, but the less they have to travel to get to your wedding, the smaller impact they will have on the environment, so try to choose a location that will require the least amount of travel for the most attendees. If you will be having a lot of out of town guests, try to make an arrangement for better rates with a local “green” hotel. Eco-friendly hotels utilize recycling, energy efficient appliances, non-toxic products, local produce and more – all making for not only a pleasant stay, but an environmentally sound one. Congratulations and best wishes to all those who are planning to get married. Here’s hoping that you have the fabulous wedding of your dreams and a long, happy marriage. All environmentally friendly, of course! ☺ Tags: diamond, eco-friendly hotel, gold, green wedding
Most couples like to give their guests a little something more than memories of their special day, in the form of favors. An obvious eco-friendly option would be small plants or seeds for planting. Another good idea is to select gifts from a local artist such as small paintings or glassware or something edible such as organic chocolate.
Everyone loves receiving gifts, but in the interest of the environment, try to not ask for items that you don’t really need. You could go one better and have your guests make donations to environmental organizations in lieu of wedding gifts.
